Short answer. An Australian single is 92 × 188 cm, a king single 107 × 203 cm, a double 138 × 188 cm, a queen 153 × 203 cm and a king 183 × 203 cm. The queen is the most popular size for couples. The single and the double are 188 cm long; everything from the king single up is 203 cm. These are mattress sizes: the frame and bedhead add more. Leave at least 60 cm beside the bed on each side you get in from (80 cm is comfortable) and 50 to 70 cm at the foot.
Australian bed and mattress sizes
| Bed | Size in cm | Also called | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 92 × 188 | S | Kids' rooms; 188 cm long |
| Long Single | 92 × 203 | Single Extra Long, SXL | A single, 15 cm longer |
| King Single | 107 × 203 | Jumbo Single, KS | 15 cm wider than a single, and 203 cm long |
| Double | 138 × 188 | D | Only 188 cm long, like a single |
| Queen | 153 × 203 | Q | The most popular size for couples |
| King | 183 × 203 | K | IKEA's King is 180 × 200 |
| Super King | 203 × 203 | No short label at Amart | Some lists give 204 × 204 |
Shops mostly agree on these numbers, with a centimetre or two of give. Upmove's table gives the double as 138 × 188 but its own text says 137 × 190, and IKEA's double measures 135 × 189. Amart also sells a Double Extra Long, 138 × 203. Check the centimetres on the label before you buy a mattress for an old base.
Double vs queen bed size: how much bed each of you gets
- Double: 69 cm each, three quarters of a single.
- Queen: 76.5 cm each.
- King: 91.5 cm each, about a whole single per person.
- Super King: 101.5 cm each.
Double vs queen: the queen is 15 cm wider and 15 cm longer. If you share a double and wake each other up, or one of you is tall, the queen is the step up.
The room each bed needs
The bed and its walkways alone, with the head against a wall. From a double up, the bed has a walkway on both sides; a single goes against a side wall with one walkway. "Snug" is 60 cm beside the bed and 50 cm at the foot; "comfortable" is 80 cm and 70 cm.
| Bed | Snug | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 1.52 × 2.38 m | 1.72 × 2.58 m |
| Long Single | 1.52 × 2.53 m | 1.72 × 2.73 m |
| King Single | 1.67 × 2.53 m | 1.87 × 2.73 m |
| Double | 2.58 × 2.38 m | 2.98 × 2.58 m |
| Queen | 2.73 × 2.53 m | 3.13 × 2.73 m |
| King | 3.03 × 2.53 m | 3.43 × 2.73 m |
| Super King | 3.23 × 2.53 m | 3.63 × 2.73 m |
A wardrobe needs its own depth plus room to open its doors, and the bedroom door needs room to swing. A room that just fits the bed on paper is often a squeeze in real life.
Traps with Australian sizes
- IKEA Australia's King is a European bed. It is 180 × 200 cm, against the Australian King's 183 × 203. IKEA says its mattresses suit standard Australian bed sizes, but its measured double (135 × 189) and queen (152 × 202) are also 1 to 3 cm off. Check before you put an IKEA mattress on another brand's base, or the other way round.
- The double is short. At 188 cm it is no longer than a single. Upmove's rule is a mattress at least 15 cm longer than the tallest sleeper, so a double suits people up to about 173 cm. Taller? Go for a queen, a king single or a long single, all 203 cm.
- An Australian queen is a US queen, near enough: 153 against 152.4 cm wide, both 203 cm long. An Australian king is not a US king: 183 cm against 193 cm wide.
- King Single and Jumbo Single are the same bed, 107 × 203 cm: a bigger single, not a small king.
How to measure
- The mattress, not the frame. Australian sizes are mattress sizes. Measure the old mattress's width and length if you are replacing one.
- The base's inside, if the base stays: from rail to rail and from bedhead to foot.
- The room, wall to wall at floor level, and where the window, the built-in robe and the door sit.
- The way in. A queen or king mattress has to turn through the hall and up any stairs. See our guide "Will it fit through the door?".
Common mistakes
- Buying by the name. "King" means 183 cm at Amart and 180 cm at IKEA, and 193 cm in the US. Buy by the centimetres.
- Forgetting the frame. A bedhead and a chunky frame can add 10 to 20 cm to the length.
- Measuring the room empty. The wardrobe doors, the bedside tables and the door swing all take the space the bed seemed to have.
See the bed in your own room
In Flatwalk you draw or photograph your home's floor plan and walk through it in 3D. Beds from real shops stand at their true size, so you can see whether a queen leaves room for the wardrobe door, and the tape measure reads any gap in centimetres.
What it does not do: Flatwalk does not choose a bed for you, and your plan is only as accurate as the measurements you give it. Measure the real room with a tape measure.
Also for Australia: door widths.

What is the difference between a double and a queen bed size? A queen is 153 × 203 cm and a double 138 × 188 cm, so the queen is 15 cm wider and 15 cm longer. Each of two people gets 76.5 cm on a queen and 69 cm on a double.
What are queen bed dimensions in cm? 153 × 203 cm in Australia. IKEA's queen measures 152 × 202 cm.
What is the king single bed size? 107 × 203 cm: 15 cm wider than a single and as long as a queen. Amart also calls it a Jumbo Single.
What size bedroom do you need for a queen bed? For the bed and walkways alone, about 2.73 × 2.53 m with 60 cm on each side and 50 cm at the foot. A wardrobe and the door swing need more space on top of that.
