Short answer. Indian beds are named by width: a single is 3 ft (36 in), a double or diwan 4 ft (48 in), a queen 5 ft (60 in) and a king 6 ft (72 in) wide. Each comes 6 ft, 6.25 ft or 6.5 ft long (72, 75 or 78 in), so a king size bed can be 6 × 6 ft or 6 × 6.5 ft. Some brands make the double 4.5 ft (54 in) wide. Brands call the queen the most popular size for couples. Leave 2 to 3 ft (60 to 90 cm) of walking space beside the bed and 50 to 70 cm at the foot.
Indian bed and mattress sizes
| Bed | Size in cm | Size in feet and inches | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 91.4 × 198.1 | 3 × 6.5 ft (36 × 78 in) | Also sold 72 or 75 in long |
| Double (diwan) | 121.9 × 198.1 | 4 × 6.5 ft (48 × 78 in) | Also sold 72 or 75 in long |
| Double, 54 in | 137.2 × 198.1 | 4.5 × 6.5 ft (54 × 78 in) | Some brands' double: Nectar lists 54 × 78, Kurlon 54 × 75 |
| Queen | 152.4 × 198.1 | 5 × 6.5 ft (60 × 78 in) | Brands call it the most popular for couples |
| King | 182.9 × 198.1 | 6 × 6.5 ft (72 × 78 in) | Also 72 × 72 in, a square 6 × 6 ft |
The table shows the 78 in (6.5 ft) length, the longest common one: a room that fits it fits the shorter beds too. The same widths are sold 72 in (6 ft, 182.9 cm) and 75 in (6.25 ft, 190.5 cm) long. Kurlon also makes custom sizes.
Brands do not agree on every size. Kurlon's 2025 guide gives the double as 48 in wide; its 2026 guide says about 54 in, and The Sleep Company says "double" means 48 or 54 in depending on the brand. The Sleep Company also lists 66 in (5.5 ft) wide queens, and Kurlon's 2026 guide gives kings of 72 to 76 in by 78 to 80 in. Check the inches on the product page before you order.
Double vs queen vs king: how much bed each of you gets
- Double, 48 in: 61 cm (24 in, 2 ft) each.
- Double, 54 in: 68.6 cm (27 in) each.
- Queen: 76.2 cm (30 in, 2.5 ft) each.
- King: 91.4 cm (36 in, 3 ft) each, a whole single per person.
If two of you share a 4 ft double, the queen is the step up: a foot wider, 15 cm more for each of you.
The room each bed needs
The bed and its walkways alone, with the head against a wall, for the 78 in (6.5 ft) length. From a double up, the bed has a walkway on both sides; a single goes against a side wall with one walkway. "Snug" is 60 cm (2 ft) beside the bed and 50 cm at the foot; "comfortable" is 80 cm and 70 cm.
| Bed | Snug | Comfortable |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 1.51 × 2.48 m (5 ft × 8 ft 2) | 1.71 × 2.68 m (5 ft 7 × 8 ft 10) |
| Double (diwan) | 2.42 × 2.48 m (7 ft 11 × 8 ft 2) | 2.82 × 2.68 m (9 ft 3 × 8 ft 10) |
| Double, 54 in | 2.57 × 2.48 m (8 ft 5 × 8 ft 2) | 2.97 × 2.68 m (9 ft 9 × 8 ft 10) |
| Queen | 2.72 × 2.48 m (8 ft 11 × 8 ft 2) | 3.12 × 2.68 m (10 ft 3 × 8 ft 10) |
| King | 3.03 × 2.48 m (9 ft 11 × 8 ft 2) | 3.43 × 2.68 m (11 ft 3 × 8 ft 10) |
The shops' own rules of thumb are bigger and leave space for a wardrobe: about 10 × 10 ft for a queen and 12 × 12 ft for a king (The Sleep Company, Sealy India). The bedroom door needs room to swing, too.
Traps with Indian sizes
- Length first or width first. Sealy India writes the length first (78 × 72 in); Kurlon and others write the width first (72 × 78). The bigger number is the length, except for a 72 × 72 king, which is square.
- Three lengths, one name. A king can be 72, 75 or 78 in long. A 78 in mattress does not go into a 72 in cot; measure the frame before you order.
- "Double" is 4 ft or 4.5 ft. A 54 in double mattress will not go into a 48 in diwan.
- Italian King is a European size. Sealy India sells an "Italian King" of 180 × 200 cm (70.9 × 78.7 in), not the Indian 72 × 78 in king.
- An Indian king can be shorter than a US twin. A 72 × 72 in king is 182.9 cm long; a US twin is 75 in (190.5 cm). A US king is 76 × 80 in.
How to measure
- The mattress, not the cot. Indian sizes are mattress sizes. Measure the old mattress's width and length, in inches, if you are replacing one.
- The frame's inside, if the cot stays: from side to side and from headboard to footboard.
- The room, wall to wall at floor level, and where the window, the wardrobe and the door sit.
- The way in. A king mattress has to turn through the door, the corridor and the lift or stairs. See our guide "Will it fit through the door?".
Common mistakes
- Buying by the name. "Double", "queen" and "king" change with the brand and the country. Buy by the inches or centimetres.
- Mixing up the length. 72, 75 and 78 in mattresses are all sold under the same name.
- Measuring the room empty. The wardrobe doors, the side tables and the door swing all take the space the bed seemed to have.
See the bed in your own room
In Flatwalk you draw or photograph your flat's plan and walk through it in 3D. Beds from real shops stand at their true size, so you can see whether a king leaves room for the wardrobe door, and the tape measure reads any gap in centimetres or in feet and inches.
What it does not do: Flatwalk does not choose a bed for you, and your plan is only as accurate as the measurements you give it. Measure the real room with a tape measure.
